Edmond (2005) ***
With 2005's Edmond, Stuart Gordon, who rarely branched away from his bread and butter—horror and sci-fi, often specifically by H.P. Lovecraft—decided to work with David Mamet, adapting his controversial 1982 stage play of same name. Not for the easily offended, Edmond tackles subjects like crime, racism, misogyny, and homophobia head-on. It's frequently an uncomfortable experience, sometimes brutal, sometimes funny, and occasionally philosophical. The results can vary in quality but Edmond is a good, gritty film bolstered by a very strong lead performance by William H. Macy in the titular role.
