Happy 15th birthday to my blog,  The Danman Can ! Each year on this date I post the  number of films I've watched per year since I've been keeping track ( 21 years of doing so today! ). Night Of The Living Dead   (1968) ( review ) meets the  The Thing  (1982) ( review ) with screechy hipster goth vampires. 30 Days Of Night (2007) (which I hadn't seen since its theatrical release) has its flaws, but it also has some fun gore and it's pretty bleak. David Slade Feature Films Ranked

My first Cinema Salem Weirdo Wednesday ! Ken Russell 's controversial  The Devils   (1971) is a wild, demented, frenzied political, sexual, religious masterwork, which I hope will eventually (and really deserves to) be released totally uncut on 4K UHD or Blu-ray someday. My favorite fun fact about this film is that I was listening to samples from it since the early '90s, more than 30 years before I ever saw it (for the first time last year). Full disclosure: I'm partial to God Of Vampires (2010) because my friend Rob Fitz directed it (I've also done theatre with cast/crew members John Sefel and Kurt Bergeron ). Anyone who knows Rob would find it hard to hate on anything he creates. That being said, despite its low budget and any related shortcomings,  GOV  is a well-made and unique action horror thriller. It was shot on (16mm) film (at a time when almost no one, especially indie filmmakers, were doing that anymore), over many years, and it's clear that it was a labor of love.  Fitz took elements of  John Woo ,  Sam Raimi ,  John Carpenter ,  Quentin Tarantino ,  Lucio Fulci , Italian Westerns , yakuza crime dramas,  wuxia , Chinese vampire /ghost films like  Mr. Vampire   (1985),  Encounter Of The Spooky Kind   (1980), and  A Chinese Ghost Story   (1987) ( review ) (plus a  De Palma esque split screen montage to boot), mixed them in a b...

John Carpenter 's best film,  my favorite horror film , and one of  my top 5 films  ever (and I'm not fucking kidding). Nearly everything about  The Thing  (1982) is perfect—from Carpenter's expert direction to  Bill Lancaster 's bleakly comic dialogue to  Dean Cundey 's memorable cinematography to   Ennio Morricone 's sparse, cold score to  Rob Bottin 's gooey, unforgettable special effects (that hold up incredibly well to this day) to  Kurt Russell 's ridiculous hat.
