Sam Raimi 's  Crimewave (1985) mixes madcap cartoon antics with film noir in a truly surreal cocktail. Not all the of the humor lands in this  Joel  and  Ethan Coen  co-scripted oddball, which drags in places and has a weird rhythm, but it's never less than entertaining, visually inventive (if geometrically impossible), and particularly fun with the right audience. With an excellent awards-heavy ensemble cast plus a  Tennessee Williams esque screenplay by  Billy Bob Thornton  and Tom Epperson ,  Sam Raimi 's supernatural thriller  The Gift  (2000)—with its strong cinematography and somber score by  Christopher Young —continues the more dramatic, less horror-centric approach he took with 1998's  A Simple Plan  ( review ). This may actually be my favorite Cate Blanchett  (who I tend to find a bit cold) performance, Giovanni Ribisi  handles his wildly unhinged character well, and Keanu Reeves plays a very convincing southern scumbag.  Sam Raimi Feature Films Ranked

A sublime snowbound neo-noir about choices, consequences, and cold hard cash.  Sam Raimi 's  A Simple Plan (1998)—with its brilliant script, terrific cast, and somber score by  Danny Elfman —holds up as one of the best films of the '90s. Sam Raimi Feature Films Ranked

There's a bit too much CGI (which hasn't aged well) and it certainly feels like  The Evil Dead   (1981) ( review )-lite, but there is enough repulsive, gooey practical effects and a palpable sense of dread in  Sam Raimi 's Drag Me To Hell (2009) to make the movie a really fun ride (and one that holds up well on rewatches). The performances are good, the creepy, grandiose score by  Christopher Young  is wonderful, the whole final act is really strong, and Raimi's return to horror after the mega-budgeted Spider-Man trilogy  was very welcome (I wish he would again; his first episode of  Ash Vs Evil Dead   (2015–2018) was also quite good).
