I've gone back and forth over the years regarding how much I like  Danny Boyle 's (a director whom I'm pretty hot and cold on)  Trainspotting (1996). I've seen the movie numerous times and I've always really liked it, but a little bit less than everyone else it seemed. I can't relate to the characters or their habits, but I can't deny that the dialogue, the performances, and the filmmaking are all great. And the soundtrack is unequivocally brilliant.  Perhaps  The Criterion Collection 's 4K UHD—where the picture looks the best it has on home video and the highly stylized, visceral, and innovative visuals really shine—helped push my opinion in the film's favor (and my rating to go up from my previous viewing on Blu-ray nearly 13 years ago). I don't understand the love for this film. It has its moments for sure but few and far between. I've mentioned before, as in my review for Steve Jobs (2015) (which I loved), that Danny Boyle is very hit or miss for me. But 28 Days Later  (2002), which I seem to recall liking more when I saw it in the theater and on DVD, is mostly just annoying to me now. I detest the cheap-looking DV/camcorder look (as much as I couldn't stand it when David Lynch did the same for his 2006 film  Inland Empire   [ review ] ). The cinematography is poor, the editing is annoyingly fast and confusing, and the action is sloppy. Not to mention, the rate of infection is absurdly rapid in a film that otherwise shoots for realism. The performances are mostly good and the film works best during its "human" moments. Danny Boyle   is a director that I'm largely hot and cold about - I love  Shallow Grave   (1994), very much enjoy  Trainspotting   (1996), hated  Sunshine   (2007), was lukewarm for  Slumdog Millionaire   (2008), I used to really like  28 Days Later  (2002) and now I'm lukewarm on that as well. I wasn't dying to see  Steve Jobs  (2015) but ended up enjoying it much more than expected. The dialogue by  Aaron Sorkin   is what shines.  Boyle  does some interesting things with the camera and his images and that's expected as well, though I don't feel that every choice works. All the actors inhabit their roles well, particularly  Fassbender , who was inspired casting, portraying a man who truly was an innovator, yet was a flawed human being, as we all are. The film is very humorous and largely avoids falling into "feel-good" territory. Definitely recom...
