DB Mix Series 8 – Death Jams

It's the 16th day of the month and it's been three months since the last DB Mix was posted, so here's the new one for ya! Read on to get the scoop on DB Mix Series 8 – Death Jams.

For those unfamiliar with these music challenges—my cousin Bryan and I alternately choose a concept, we each choose the appropriate number of songs, make a playlist, share with each other, then I mix the playlists, design the album art, and share with you! You can check out the previous DB Mixes here.

The concept this time was chosen by me—each of us was to make a 20-track mix of songs about death (from our available MP3 collections). The rules I set were: a limit of 10 songs with the word "death" in title, no tracks from movie scores (I included a "song" from a "soundtrack"—not the same thing), but songs from singles & EPs were OK this time. The cover art is an altered version of a still image from the famous Technicolor scene in The Phantom Of The Opera (1925), which I had rewatched recently. Hopefully you'll recognize the altered logo I used for the title (and what it references) as well. The back cover is also an image from POTO '25.

To recap our main rule—we never tell each other which songs we are going to pick, so the mixes are a surprise for us both. We happen to have a lot of the same artists/songs in our respective (and large) music libraries and we often share artists/songs, so sometimes we choose the same songs or artists for these mixes.

This time around neither of us chose any of the same songs! In fact we only chose one of the same artist—Tom Waits. Bryan was a bit more creative than me when it came to song choices; I stuck to songs with the words "death", "dead" or "die" in the title. I did accidentally choose a song used on a previous DB Mix (a first and something we avoid doing)—Gary Numan's "I Die: You Die" but decided to let it slide after already creating the mix. (I'll let you do some digging to find which previous mix contained that song.) We hope you enjoy this round of mixes! 🎶💀
