3:10 To Yuma (2007) ****

James Mangold's 2007 version of 3:10 To Yuma taps into every western trope, delivering one of my favorites from the last 15 years. Mangold's update of the Elmore Leonard 1953 short story (its second screen outing, after Delmer Daves' also excellent 1957 adaptation) satisfies on every viewing (my fourth—cinema, DVD, Blu-ray, and now in a new 4K UHD steelbook with beautiful artwork). It's one of my top 3 Leonard feature film adaptations (see list below) and was one of my Top Films Of 2007 (what a great year for film). There's no reinventing the wheel here, just superb craftsmanship on display—compelling characters, a super solid cast, great action, handsome cinematography, and a strong score by Marco Beltrami.
