Drop Dead Fred (1991) ***

Largely a vehicle for Rik Mayall to act the fool, Drop Dead Fred (1991) was a silly and fun movie for tween me. Watching it as an adult, the psychological aspects of anxiety, depression, and mental illness are much more apparent. Now considered a cult film, it doesn't really elicit many laughs, but it's still enjoyable (even if it does feel like Beetlejuice-lite (review)) and has a lot of heart. I still have a crush on Phoebe Cates, who imbued this role, one of only a few of her well-known ones, with a sweetness and genuine believability.
