Gozu (2003) ***1/2

In which Takashi Miike makes his version of a Buñuel/Lynch head trip. The surreal repetitive nature of Sakichi Sato's (Ichi The Killer [2001]) script reminded me of those two mavericks until it went full-on Cronenberg/Gordon in the gooey, gross-out psychosexual finale. Miike tops it off by literally trolling the audience in the final shot. I don't know what this film means in the slightest, and I'm fine not trying to figure it out.
