The Gift (2000) ***1/2
With an excellent awards-heavy ensemble cast plus a Tennessee Williamsesque screenplay by Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson, Sam Raimi's supernatural thriller The Gift (2000)—with its strong cinematography and somber score by Christopher Young—continues the more dramatic, less horror-centric approach he took with 1998's A Simple Plan (review). This may actually be my favorite Cate Blanchett (who I tend to find a bit cold) performance, Giovanni Ribisi handles his wildly unhinged character well, and Keanu Reeves plays a very convincing southern scumbag.
