The Old Dark House (1932) ***1/2

James Whale 's  The Old Dark House   (1932) is my least favorite of the director's pictures that I've seen (I've watched the film three times now) and I still find the story a bit lacking, but I recognize the influence of this Gothic horror comedy, and appreciate the actors and the dynamic cinematography. Caught Stealing (2025) ***1/2

"Sad world." "Broken world." Caught Stealing (2025) was better than I expected from the Guy Ritchie -esque trailer. There is still a crime caper aspect to the film, but there is a melancholic quality hanging over the proceedings and  Darren Aronofsky 's trademarks are present, here and there. I really enjoyed this one. Nice cat , too. Darren Aronofsky Feature Films Ranked

The Toxic Avenger (2023) ***

A very fun update. Macon Blair's  The Toxic Avenger   (2023) has the same energy and vibe as  Hobo With A Shotgun   (2011) ( review ) and the films of  Steven Kostanski . It's a little longer than it needs to be (all the  TA  films are, honestly) and there is a bit more CGI than I typically like (although it bothered me less here because the violence is so cartoonish anyway), but there are some hilarious gore gags, it's got a great cast, and this is easily the most well-made and best-looking  Troma  film ever. Also,  this  is cool. Macon Blair Films Ranked

Slumber Party Massacre II (1987) ***

Nothing will top Rebecca 's review, so here's that . A goofy, frankly pretty shitty,  NOES  rip-off, but there are a few great gore gags, some hilariously bad musical numbers, and it's amusing throughout. I appreciate that the filmmakers of 1987's  Slumber Party Massacre II   tried something different and more bizarro than its predecessor ( review ) and this one was, expectedly, even more fun with an audience on a rewatch. But I'm A Cheerleader - Director's Cut (1999) ***1/2

Image
But I'm A Cheerleader   (1999) is a cute and campy conversion comedy that playfully satirizes gender roles and heteronormativity. It's got a great cast, a cool score and soundtrack, and fun, vibrant production design (which really pops on the 4K UHD) to reflect the themes. It's fairly predictable and at times sappy, but it's a charming, sweet, and funny cult film with a message to be true to your self. Recommended for fans of  Heathers  (1988) ( review ), Clueless (1995) ( review ), and  Psycho Beach Party   (2000) ( review ).
