Mean Streets (1973) ****

Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets (1973), his most personal and autobiographical film, sits low on my ranking of his filmography. Yet I still love the movie—I've seen it many times and I recognize the enormity of its influence on independent cinema. Raw and immediate, propelled by an eclectic soundtrack, bursts of realistic violence, and frenetic performances by Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel, Scorsese's breakout hit—under the guise of a gangster picture—is a electric treatise on masculinity, religion, and friendship.
