Taxi Driver (1976) is a movie that took me several viewings to realize its genius. Once I did it was cemented as one of my favorite films. Paul Schrader's brilliant script, Martin Scorsese's perfect direction, Robert De Niro's career-defining performance, the incredible supporting cast, Michael Chapman's gorgeous, neon-soaked cinematography, Bernard Herrmann's wonderful, jazzy score, Dick Smith's gruesome makeup, the harrowing climax, the sense of realism amidst the dreamy atmosphere, the sadly always topical subject matter. A masterpiece made by legends.
