Drag Me To Hell (2009) ***1/2
There's a bit too much CGI (which hasn't aged well) and it certainly feels like The Evil Dead (1981) (review)-lite, but there is enough repulsive, gooey practical effects and a palpable sense of dread in Sam Raimi's Drag Me To Hell (2009) to make the movie a really fun ride (and one that holds up well on rewatches). The performances are good, the creepy, grandiose score by Christopher Young is wonderful, the whole final act is really strong, and Raimi's return to horror after the mega-budgeted Spider-Man trilogy was very welcome (I wish he would again; his first episode of Ash Vs Evil Dead (2015–2018) was also quite good). Plus that whopper of an ending!
