Paris, Texas (1984) ****1/2

Unequivocally Harry Dean Stanton’s greatest, most affecting performance. A snapshot of a simpler time, with a style somewhere between David Byrne and David LynchNastassja Kinski is impossibly beautiful and achingly heartbreaking. Robby Müller's Hopper-inspired cinematography is gorgeous—virtually every shot could be a painting. Ry Cooder’s twangy score perfectly compliments the southern landscapes and Wim Wenders’ leisurely pace wonderfully suits Sam Shepard's intimate story. Paris, Texas (1984) is essential viewing—a tender, existential journey of love, loss, and family.
