The Wiz (1978) ****
I hadn't seen Sidney Lumet's The Wiz (1978) since I was a child. It's a bit long, but what a fun, surreal, and singular film! This Afrocentric retelling of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz (1900) (based on the 1974 musical) features a fantastic cast, eye-popping production and costume design, and soulful songs.
Recommended for fans of The Boy Friend (1971) (review), Tommy (1975) (review), Xanadu (1980) (review), and Annie (1982).
