Moonstruck (1987) ****

For some reason, I didn't expect to like Moonstruck (1987) as much as I did. In fact, I loved it. I wouldn't say that I avoided it outright—I just never made it a priority to watch. After chatting about Nicolas Cage the other night with a friend (and then listening to this episode of his podcast, Moving The Needle, in which they had a "Cage Match", if you will), I decided I should fix that.

I don't dislike Cher, but neither am I what I'd call a great fan of hers. However, between this and Mermaids (1990) (my review here), she is really charming and her character has agency (there is no Prince Charming here). Cage is actually relatively subdued here, which is where I personally find that he does his best work—let the man have a few of his typical outbursts, but rope him in.

I didn't expect this romantic comedy to be so funny, as I’m very particular about that genre (and honestly, avoid the majority of films classified as such). Moonstruck, while a bit broad and over the top, is breezy fun, but also has great characters and a family that feels real (especially to Italian Americans, despite the stereotypes).
