Bringing Out The Dead (1999) ****
Martin Scorsese's Bringing Out The Dead (1999) is a beautiful flip side to Taxi Driver (1976) (review) featuring one of Nicolas Cage's best performances and a stacked supporting cast of top notch actors. BOTD is a downbeat film but one with a wonderful sense of humor, thanks to Paul Schrader's screenplay. Robbie Robertson's radical cinematography utilizes many different techniques to give the film a distinctive look and feel, perfectly complimented by Elmer Bernstein's moving score and an eclectic soundtrack. A haunting rumination on life, death, faith, and the limits of human compassion.
