Doom Asylum (1987) **1/2

Well, now I can say that I've seen the other film starring Patty Mullen. Frankenhooker (1990) this is not, though. That movie is silly and horny but really fun and a cult classic. 1987's Doom Asylum is a pretty run-of-the-mill slasher comedy that is only mildly funny and is mostly pretty doofy. DA reminds me of the following year's Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (review) in tone and presentation and it's also got the feel of a Charles Band production.

The film was shot in 8–12 days and it shows. Parts of DA are certainly enjoyable and the characters are intentionally ridiculous, but this 79-minute movie feels like two hours and it blows my mind that the filmmakers still needed to use about 10 minutes of footage from five 1930s films (with seemingly no connection whatsoever) to pad out the running time. I also find it amazing that director Richard Friedman released another, better, picture, Scared Stiff (review) (which was cowritten by Twin PeaksMark Frost!), the same year.
