The Escapees (1981) ***1/2 [Rollin Double Feature Pt. 2]
Largely devoid of his trademark poetry and surreality (save for one magical ice skating scene), Jean Rollin's The Escapees (1981) maintains a fairy tale quality and this road movie odyssey doesn't lack for evocative imagery. I liked this one simply because it felt a bit different for Rollin and there is a blanket of tragedy (complete with downbeat ending) that suffuses the whole affair.
