Play Misty For Me (1971) ***1/2 [Eastwood Double Feature Pt. 1]
It's possible that I saw Play Misty For Me (1971) when I was a teenager, but I can't recall for sure. Clint Eastwood's directorial debut is very assured, featuring strong cinematography and performances (Jessica Walter is superb). Director Don Siegel's (who plays a small role) influence is quite apparent on this giallo-like psychological thriller—a mostly economic affair with occasional artistic flairs (the Roberta Flack-soundtracked love scene is beautiful). The film meanders a bit, but overall it's an impressive debut.
