The Keep (1983) ***1/2
Michael Mann's little-seen cult favorite, The Keep (1983), is a cosmic, existential, Lovecraftian supernatural horror movie about a quasi-vampiric, golem-like malevolent spirit facing off against Nazis who have invaded a Romanian village. The picture lacks characterization and connective tissue (much of which can be attributed to the post-production troubles) but makes up for it with its oneric atmosphere, gorgeous visuals, wonderful practical effects, and the exquisite Tangerine Dream score. A flawed film but an interesting one that I'm glad I finally got around to seeing (thanks to Vinegar Syndrome's typically excellent 4K UHD).
