The Substance (2024) ****

Image
An unflinching, unforgiving tale of body dysmorphia, unnatural beauty standards, fame, ageism, and gender roles in the form of an immensely enjoyable, stylish, hilarious, grotesque, over the top body horror satire. There was a ton of hype (something I'm always wary of) surrounding  The Substance   (2024), but, despite the film taking a while to fully get me on board the first time through, I can confirm that it 100% delivers the goods and 100% holds up on a rewatch.  You can tell that this picture was made by real horror fans (the effects are wonderful). The finale is truly a spectacle of blood 'n' guts 'n' viscera.  Demi Moore  and  Margaret Qualley  deliver fearless, committed performances and  Dennis Quaid  plays a perfect slimeball. Cheers,  Coralie Fargeat . Recommended for fans of  Antiviral  (2012),  A Cure For Wellness  (2016) ( review ),  Dead Alive  (1992) (review),  The Fly  (1986),...

The owl is not what it seems. This was the final night of  Weirdo Wednesday  in Lowell, MA (continuing on in Salem, MA , though it's likely I'll only make it out there once a month, tops), the weekly weird, obscure, and subversive film night that Rob Fitz  (of The Magic Parlor )—along with Becky —presented at the  Luna Theater  in  Mill No. 5  (tragically being shutdown in a few days; shoutout to all of the crew there over the years).  Across 415 films , I made many memories and built a community of friends (family, really—shoutouts to Rob, Becky, Melinda, Kate C., Chris T., Bobby, Bobby's dad, Kate R., Isabelle, JR, Dylan, Sam, Peter, Matt, Amy, Ryan, Mike D., I could keep going and I apologize if I left you out...). Every Wednesday I had a blast watching movies with fellow Weirdos, to break up the monotony of the work week. Even when I had seen the films (which was probably 70% of the time), it was always great to spend time in a magical li...

WW Lowell, the Luna, and  Mill No. 5 ; you will be missed! NSFW (Nudity and gore aplenty) Click here to watch the video that I created for WW400. Vampires (1998) ***

Image
John Carpenter 's Vampires (1998) is occasionally annoying in its overly old-fashioned macho qualities and Sheryl Lee is given short shrift (though she does a lot with the role as is), but it's a well-shot neo-Western action horror film with a decent premise (never quite satisfactorily explored) and some fun visual effects by KNB .  John Carpenter Films Ranked Top 20 Directors
