Videodrome (1983) ****1/2
Videodrome (1983), David Cronenberg's surreal body horror version of The Manchurian Candidate (1962) (review), is an endlessly rewatchable film. Despite some dated (but awesome) makeup f/x from Rick Baker and an outlandish plot, Videodrome, at its core, seems scarily closer to reality than ever. There's a wonderful pacing to this sci-fi techno-political thriller and Howard Shore’s spare synthesized score conveys a true sense of dread which perfectly suits the oppressive nature of this influential masterwork.
