The Vagrant (1992) ****

Bolstered by committed performances by genre greats Bill Paxton, Michael Ironside, Marshall Bell, and Colleen Camp, effects wizard Chris Walas' second (and final?) directorial feature The Vagrant (1992) is a madcap tale of The American Dream gone bad. Walas was best known for his creature effects work on Gremlins (1984) (review) and David Cronenberg's The Fly (1986) (as well as the infamous face melt in 1981's Raiders Of The Lost Ark), before directing the gooey, gory sequel The Fly II in 1989. Similar in tone and black humor to another 1989 cult classic, The 'Burbs (review), The Vagrant is a total blast. Horror hero composer Christopher Young's unique and immersive score matches the onscreen zaniness to really bring Walas' vision to life. An underrated slice of scare cinema.

Recommended for fans of Joe Dante, Wes Craven, and Tobe Hooper.
