My Criterion Top 10 [Vol. 8]

Image
In the past,  The Criterion Collection  allowed its users to make Top 10 lists on their My Criterion page. I still continue to make them, on  Letterboxd , every two years. Here’s my latest volume: My Criterion Top 10 [Vol. 8] The titles in the link above are ones that Criterion released (some of which are format upgrades) since the previous volume that I posted. If you'd like to visit the previous volumes, you can do so at the links below. The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) ***1/2

🎶 Whatever will be, will be 🎶 I'm probably in the minority of those who slightly prefer Hitchcock 's 1934 original  to his 1956 remake , but this version is still a very entertaining thriller that builds to a tense, emotional, expertly directed finale. Alfred Hitchcock Feature Films Ranked Top 20 Directors

The Trouble With Harry (1955) ****

Image
Quaint, amusing, and charming. I've always particularly loved this "minor"  Hitchcock  film, one of his few true comedies and his first (of seven) pairing(s) with composer  Bernard Herrmann  who provides a delightfully playful score. The gorgeously shot (in  VistaVision !), idyllic Vermont setting and  Shirley MacLaine  (in her screen debut) probably have something to do with it. Alfred Hitchcock Feature Films Ranked Top 20 Directors

Dogma (1999) ***1/2

Image
"No pleasure, no rapture, no exquisite sin greater...than central air." Kevin Smith 's "sacrilegious," "profane" religious satire,  Dogma  (1999), holds up about the same as his other most-beloved works for me—meaning sometimes I find him too clever for his own good, sometimes his dialogue is really great, and sometimes his staging, action, pacing, and editing are pretty average. All of that applies to  Dogma , which caused the most controversy of his career (even leading to death threats), but I still have a soft spot of sorts for the director and this film (which has the best cast of any of Smith's films). Rear Window (1954) ****1/2

"Tell me everything you saw and what...you think it means." Intricately staged, exquisitely shot, and wonderfully characterized. Alfred Hitchcock Feature Films Ranked Top 20 Directors

Six-String Samurai (1998) ***1/2

Image
Mad Max ,  The Wizard Of Oz  (1939) [ review ], and The Shaw Brothers , but make it campy and rockabilly. Lance Mungia 's Six-String Samurai (1998) is a film that I stumbled upon via Blockbuster VHS rental in the late '90s. I can't help but still be amused by its goofy, low budget charm, genre mashing, and fun soundtrack .

Battle Royale - Director's Cut (2000) ***1/2

"You're the coolest girl in the world." "I don't know what any of it means." "I just don't want to be a loser anymore."

Note that the number of films I logged...

At Close Range (1986) ***1/2

Nothing feels better than blood on blood. James Foley 's disturbing and menacing crime drama  At Close Range (1986) has terrific performances, moody cinematography, and strong direction, but goddamn if the film isn't just one big tease/build-up to Madonna 's greatest song .
