Killer Workout (1987) **

In 1987 writer/director David A. Prior released three films—two actioners in the female-centric Mankillers (review) and its male counterpart Deadly Prey, and the tepid slasher Killer Workout (originally titled Aerobicide, which is way more fun).

KW is full of horror tropes—a freakish, disturbed killer, an inept cop, lecherous men, women shedding clothes, hapless victims, you name it. The acting is poor (everyone has an attitude or seems unsure about delivering their lines), the dialogue is hilariously bad, the fights are awkward, and the kills aren't particularly effective (though the murder weapon is laughably ludicrous).

There are lots of fit female bodies gyrating to catchy synth jams (Exhibit A, Exhibit B)—in fact I think some of the footage is even recycled throughout the film (that shot of the facade of Rhonda's Workout certainly is). And the film is definitely fun to laugh at with a rowdy audience. But overall, KW is a weaker version of Lucio Fulci's Murder Rock (1984) (review), which is an "A" picture by comparison.
