The Juniper Tree (1990) ****

A dark and dreamy drama, Nietzchka Keene's The Juniper Tree (1990) (shot in 1986) is a Dreyer/Bergmanesque medieval fairy tale (loosely based on the Brothers Grimm story) featuring sumptuous black and white cinematography and a beautifully naturalistic debut performance by Björk. A melancholic low budget slow burn mood piece reflecting on witchcraft and folklore threaded through exquisite ambiguity and brimming with otherworldly quality.
