The Invisible Man (1933) **** [Universal Monsters Double Feature Pt. 1]

The Invisible Man (1933) is a truly mean movie. The protagonist, based on H. G. Wells' 1897 novel, is a true villain, with delusions of grandeur, unlike more sympathetic Universal Monsters such as the Wolf Man and Frankenstein’s monster. Dr. Jack Griffin delights in his reign of terror—taunting, stealing, and killing with aplomb (TIM definitely has the highest body count of the classic Universal Monster movies). Claude Rains hams it up in his American feature film debut (surprisingly, he was already 43 years old). Una O'Connor is a delight as well, and there's plenty of clever special effects. As mean as the character is, TIM is the also the funniest of the classic Universal Monsters movies (though a couple times a bit too goofy, in my opinion).
