Last Action Hero (1993) ***

While I don't think its satire is nearly as clever as some folks, Last Action Hero (1993) is a humorous and heartfelt—if overlong and occasionally goofy—film with plenty of replay value. There are some exciting action sequences which are pure John McTiernan, though some of the effects work has aged poorly. Somehow I had forgotten that Shane Black co-wrote this movie, but it makes perfect sense given the spunky, resourceful (gun-toting) kid (a trope I'm typically annoyed by but which mostly gets a pass here) and the attempts at being canny. Arnold Schwarzenegger has some good one-liners and the supporting cast is made up of some great character actors (and more than a few amusing cameos). A fun ride with a solid conceit.
