The Island Of Dr. Moreau (1977) ***1/2

1977's The Island Of Dr. Moreau is a strong adaptation of H.G. Wells' 1896 novel with a great cast and exceptional makeup (which surely would have won the Academy Award, had that category been created yet). In this version of the man versus beast tale, the beats are familiar and the filmmaking is mostly in the classic tradition, but it's well-shot, well-acted, and entertaining throughout.

Recommended for fans of Island Of Lost Souls (1932), The Island Of Dr. Moreau (1996), and Planet Of The Apes (1968).
