Cuckoo (2024) ***
Tilman Singer's Cuckoo (2024) is a perfectly solid high-concept sci-fi horror film that sits comfortably in line with the current trend of genre films where main characters work their way through trauma while strange shit happens around them. It's reminiscent of David Cronenberg, tonally similar to something like Goodnight Mommy (2014) (review), and the filmmaking is, again, perfectly solid, but the movie never gets weird enough (in the way that, say, Cronenberg or Yorgos Lanthimos films do), never shocks, and never leans into its b-movie trappings in the way that it probably should. Hunter Schafer (who gets put through the wringer) is good here and Dan Stevens is reliably precise and menacing, but the film is longer than it needs to be and often feels like a Netflix product.
