Footprints On The Moon (1975) ***1/2

Much like the director's film The Possessed (aka La donna del lago) (review) a decade earlier, the pleasure in Luigi Bazzoni's Footprints On The Moon (Le orme) (1975) comes from watching its mystery unraveling, rather than being solved. This Hitchcockian, Kafkaesque, giallo-tinged thriller features a wonderfully dreamlike atmosphere, a strong lead performance by the always intense Florinda Bolkan, and sumptuous cinematography by Vittorio Storaro. However, I found the scenes with Klaus Kinski unnecessary, sloppy, and jarring (not to mention poorly dubbed). If it weren't for that, Footprints would easily earn another half star.

Recommended for fans of Don't Look Now (1973) (review), The Psychic (Sette Note In Nero) (1977) (review), and Mulholland Drive (2001) (review).
