Tales From The Darkside: The Movie (1990) ***1/2
Tales From The Darkside: The Movie (1990) is a stylish, handsomely shot horror anthology with a superb cast of soon to be big name stars plus a couple of rock legends. I love how different each segment is from each other, in every way (tonally, stylistically, etc.)—it gives each a distinct identity (the diverse score also helps with this). In particular, the final segment, Lover's Vow, has an emotional power lacking in many anthology stories—it's a genuinely moving piece of filmmaking. The wraparound is a lot of fun as well. The excellent effects work, via KNB, gets progressively gorier and the transformation in Lover's Vow is a show-stopper. This was a first-time (long overdue) watch for me and I was really impressed. “Don’t you just love happy endings?”
Recommended for fans of The Monster Club (1981), Creepshow (1982) (review), The Company Of Wolves (1984) (review), and Body Bags (1993).
