Sidekicks (1992) ***
At its core, 1992's Sidekicks is basically The Karate Kid (1984) meets Cloak & Dagger (1984) (and also has a lot of the same ideas that Last Action Hero (review) used the following year). I thought I had never seen the film but as I watched it, many scenes felt very familiar. It's goofy as hell, more than a bit racist, and mildly sexist, but it's far from mean-spirited and it's got a lot of heart. It's well-shot, the cast is great, and, as silly as it is, it's hard to hate on a movie that's this fun. Plus, who doesn't love an underdog story?
